Author Interview and Giveaway: Amanda Hocking

Please welcome Amanda Hocking, author of the Trylle Trilogy!

3LB: iLive, iLaugh, iLove Books, AKA Lucia (Me)
AH: Amanda Hocking

AH: I write books, mostly young adult and paranormal romance, and nine of my books are for sale right now. I’m twenty-six, live in Minnesota, mostly watch rad 80s movies, and read a lot of Batman graphic novels.

Questions about the Trylle Trilogy:
3LB: Who or what inspired you to write? Do you have any role models?
AH: I don’t know what initially inspired me to write, because I started writing when I was really young. My role models in life are Jim Henson and John Hughes, because they’re something so fun and innocent in the way they approached life. But my literary role models are Richelle Mead and Diablo Cody. Both of them are so smart and funny, and they create real girls who are funny, awkward, and brilliant in their own ways.

3LB: Why trolls? Why not vampires, werewolves, fairies, or angels?
AH: I wanted to do something a little different. But I read something in Swedish mythology about trolls being beautiful, and I really fell in love with the idea. I have another series about vampires, and I’m working on a few stories with more traditional paranormal creatures.

3LB: Are any of your characters or scenes based on people/events in your own life?
AH: Not directly. I think I’m always inspired by the people and things in my life, but I don’t specifically set out to create a character based on someone.

3LB: Are any of your own interests represented in the book?
AH: Not a ton in this one. Some of the music and movies I mentioned I enjoy. I am also a little obsessed with the idea of being move things with your mind, but I can’t actually do that.

3LB: Do you have a dream cast for your book?
AH: Not an entire cast. I have my heart set on Michael Wincott for Oren, and I really like Olivia Thirlby for Wendy. Blake Lively would make a fun Willa, and I think Charlie Hunnam would make a great Loki.

3LB: What other books have you written?
AH: I have four other books and a novella in different series about vampires called My Blood Approves, and I have the first book in a zombie series called Hollowland.

3LB: What three people/characters would you love to meet? (They can be fictional, dead, or real and very much alive!)
AH: James Franco, Batman, and Jim Henson. Batman, because he’s awesome; Jim Henson, because I’d love to talk to him and see how is mind works in real time; and James Franco, because he fascinates me.

3LB: Is there a book or series that you would recommend everybody to read?
AH: I think everyone everywhere should read Slaughter-house Five by Kurt Vonengut. I’d go so far as to say it’s the most important book written in the 20th century. But for more paranormal romance recommendations, I really loved Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and Jenny Pox by J. L. Bryan.

3LB: Do you have a favorite book or author?
AH: My favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut, Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahnuik, Jeph Loeb, Richelle Mead, and J. D. Salinger, and my favorite books are probably Cat’s Cradle by Vonnegut and Watchmen by Alan Moore.

3LB: This one might be difficult, but... chocolate or coffee?
AH: I’m not that big into either, but I do really enjoy iced lattes, so probably coffee. If the question were Sweet Tarts or Red Bull, I’d have a heck of a time picking.

3LB: Favorite past-times? Hobbies?
AH: I’m into pretty standard stuff. Writing, reading, watching movies, playing video games, spending time with my friends and my dog. I also make collages and decoupage furniture.

3LB: If you could have any supernatural ability, what would it be and why?
AH: Flying. The amount of time it takes to get places holds people back so much.

3LB: Biggest pet peeves?
AH: When people say the word “literally” when they mean “figuratively.” Except for when Rob Lowe says it on Parks & Rec. I find that adorable.

3LB: Tell us five interesting things about yourself.
-I was once in a music video for the band Cold
-I’m going to be in Elle magazine in the April issue
-If I’m annoyed or frustrated, I sometimes start yelling in French, but I don’t know that much French, so it’s usually like, “My pen is yellow!” or  “The whale is swimming!”
-I have a tattoo of a frog on my ankle
-My hair used to be blue and purple, but now it’s just brown

3LB: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
AH: I will hopefully have a new book coming out in March (or possibly April) called Lost Without You. It’s a little different than my other books, because while it’s young adult, it’s not paranormal romance. It’s about a teenage girl that goes missing and her friends desperate attempts to find her.
