Author Interview and Giveaway: Malinda Lo

Please welcome Malinda Lo, award-winning author of Ash and Huntress!

3LB: iLive, iLaugh, iLove Books AKA Lucia (Me)
ML: Malinda Lo

3LB: Who or what inspired you to write? Do you have any role models?
ML: My biggest role model was definitely my paternal grandmother, to whom I dedicated my first novel, Ash. She was a writer herself, and some of my earliest memories are of making up stories with her.

3LB: What elements influenced you to create the world you did in Huntress?
ML: The magic system in Huntress is strongly influenced by Taoism and the I Ching, a Chinese book of divination. I also used some elements from Chinese medicine, although I do NOT make any attempts to be medically accurate!

Huntress3LB: Where did you get the unique names for your characters?
ML: I looked through a lot (and I mean a lot) of name lists. I wanted the names of the main characters to sound sort of Asian, but I also wanted them to be easily pronounceable by people who don't speak any Asian languages. I didn't want the human characters to sound super foreign. So I took Chinese, Japanese, and and other Asian names and often changed the spellings. The fairies, however, have names that are Gaelic in origin. I wanted the fairy names to be difficult to read and pronounce because I wanted them to sound exotic, so I kept a lot of the original spellings in those cases.

3LB: Do you have a favorite character from your own book?
ML: In Huntress, I think my favorite character is Kaede. I love the other characters, too, but I worked really hard on her, and I love the way she turned out.

3LB: Do you have a dream cast for your book?
AshML: Nope. I know a lot of people love to do fantasy casting, but I'm actually not one of them! I know, I'm weird. :) I just like to imagine the characters the way I do in my own head.

3LB: What’s next for you?
ML: I'm working on young adult novel currently titled Adaptation, due out in fall 2012. It's sci-fi-ish, and it begins when bird strikes cause so many planes to crash that the United States grounds all flights, leaving two teens stranded in Phoenix after a debate tournament. They have to get back home to San Francisco, and on the way, they crash onto a top-secret military base, leading to life-changing repercussions.

3LB: What three people/characters would you love to meet? (They can be fictional or dead!)
  • Agent Dana Scully from The X-Files
  • Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women
  • Anne Shirley of Anne of Green Gables

3LB: Is there a book or series that you think everybody should read?
ML: Holly Black's Curse Workers series is awesome. White Cat is the first book, and the second one, Red Glove, comes out the same day as Huntress!

3LB: What’s your favorite food?
ML: My mom's hongshao rou, which is this Chinese pork stew. Yum. OMG I love hongshao rou!

3LB: Favorite thing to do (other than read and write)? Do you have other hobbies?
ML: Cook! I love to cook and I love the results: food I get to eat.

3LB: Dog or cat person?
ML: DOG. Although I love cats, too. But I have a dog now and she would never tolerate a cat in the family.

3LB: If you could have any supernatural ability, what would it be, and why?
ML: I would like the ability to have awesome fashion at all times, without any effort on my part at all! Haha!
