Author Interview and Giveaway: C.C. Hunter

cc hunterLast Tuesday, I had the honor of interviewing in person Ms. C.C. Hunter, author of the 2011 YA debut Born at Midnight! Please give her a warm welcome!

C.C. Hunter grew up in Alabama, where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and regularly rescued potential princes, in the form of Alabama bullfrogs, from her brothers. Today, she's still fascinated with lightning bugs, mostly wears shoes, but has turned her focus to rescuing mammals. She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. When she's not writing, she's reading, spending time with her family, or is shooting things-with a camera, not a gun.

3LB: Let's start things easy. Where are you from?
Alabama. I lived in California for a while, met a man there, who brought me to Houston in 1984. California was too big for me.
You can take the girl out of the south, but not the south out of the girl. :)

3LB: What is your favorite quality about yourself?
Ooh... well, I am a persevering person. A tenacious, "go after it," person who's serious about "never giving up."

3LB: What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
Making a good living on writing - it's an art, hard to mak3 a living off of. I'm doing very well with it. One of my goals is to make a list, such as the New York Times Bestselling. Born at Midnight has been nominated as one of the top teen debuts.

3LB: What inspired you to become a writer?
I really think it was the fact that I was always a storyteller - in my head. I was scared to come out with my dreams because of dyslexia, but I really wanted to get my stories down on paper. I still make mistakes, but I've learned and have much improved.

3LB: Can you tell us about your main characters?
I cried while writing, I laughed during funny scenes. I think I have "quirky" characters.
Kylie: She's always quiet, felt like she never fit in, and is struggling with who she is. It kind of makes sense when she finds out she's not human, but even there she stands out. The camp becomes her "touchstone," where people there offer opportunities so she can become herself and find out who she really is.
Della and Miranda are Kylie's new best friends. They bicker constantly, and drive Kylie CRAZY. Kylie is always their peace keeper. However, they do care about each other, like sisters. Della has trouble at home because she's biracial, and her Asian father is very strict. Miranda's mom is not happy with her because she's dyslexic and hasn't reached her expectations. She's a "failed" witch.
Lucas: The [HOT] werewolf. He's got secrets. Kylie knows things about him that could get him in trouble. They knew each other when they were younger.
Derek: He's a half-fae, half-human boy who goes to camp to get rid of his powers because his fae father left and he doesn't want to be like his father. While he has the ability to get rid of them, if he uses his powers, they will become more permanent. One day the situation arises in which he needs to save Kylie's life, so he has to choose to either accept who he is, or Kylie.
Perry: Kylie understands him, even though he's annoying and the class clown at first. He's a shape-shifter, and has been shifting his entire life, melting himself into what other people want him to be.
You can go to C.C.'s website and read exclusive scenes written from Derek's and Lucas's point of view about when they first saw Kylie! There's also a free bonus story and an excerpt from the first book!

3LB: What was the hardest part about writing this book?
Getting you to have to show prejudism - vampires and werewolves, witches and fae, they're enemies. You learn to write and look at "the ugly side of life." People don't get along at camp because they think you're different, and they think that they're right. It doesn't matter what you are. Della's half Asian, and she has to deal with her father and his strong pride. She doesn't know how to come out with her vampirism.

3LB: If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be?
Accepting who we are. Nobody's perfect. Everybody has flaws. Della drinks blood, but she's not a monster. Life is a journey where everybody figures out where they're going. This is Kylie's quest.

3LB: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I think I'm having lots of fun writing the stories of magic, and I want people to believe in magic again- and in themselves. This story is about someone learning who they are. Every character in this book has a different story.

Thank you so much, C.C.! It was great meeting you! For more information about C.C., visit:
