Huber Hill Blog Tour: Author Interview and Giveaway

B.K. Bostick, author of Dead Man's Treasure, resides among the magnificent Rocky Mountains. In addition to writing, he has spent his career in education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Utah and his Masters in Psychology from Utah State University. He has worked as a teacher, after school program coordinator, junior high school counselor, and a teacher mentor for a University. He loves spending time with his lovely wife and two dogs. In his spare time, he enjoys eating cheetos and watching old episodes of the Twilight Zone.
3LB: Who or what inspired you to write? Do you have any role models, whether in writing or life in general?
I suppose I reached the point where I got bored enough to write a novel. When I was a kid I loved to write stories but lost some of that motivation as I became an adult. I was so glad to rekindle that passion. I had some help from Obert Skye, Brandon Mull, J. Scott Savage, and others who inspired me to keep on keeping on.
3LB: Do you have a favorite character from your own book?
I really enjoy Scott. He’s the Samwise to Huber’s Frodo. He’s loyal to a fault but also speaks his mind and doesn’t hold back.
3LB: What part of your writing process is your favorite part and why?
I love the revision process because at that point the big ideas are on paper and its all downhill from there. You can focus on polishing the little details to make the story shine.
3LB: Do you share personality characteristics with any of your characters? Did you put part of yourself in them as you they were being created on paper and ink?
I suppose as a kid I was more like Huber than anyone in the story- shy, lazy, a bit unsure of myself. However, like Huber when I set my mind to something I saw it through.
3LB: Do you have anything that you need to have around you when you write, such as a specific playlist/radio station in the background, coffee, a desk in a quiet room?
I need it to be absolutely quiet. I also like to have a two liter of Mountain Dew and some Reeses nearby for those late nights of writing. I love those nights! I don’t love the next morning.
3LB: What plans do you have for the future?
I am working on book 2 of the Huber Hill series. It’s called Huber Hill and the Brotherhood of Coronado. It will be released Oct. 2012.
3LB: If you bring to life any book character in history, who would you chose?
Don Quixote without a doubt. I love that old man. I would gladly be his esquire.
3LB: If you were to go live on an island and could only choose 5 books to take with you, what would you choose?
  1. Redwall by Brian Jacques
  2. Don Quixote by Cervantes
  3. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (even more appropriate since I’d be on an island)
  4. Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks (just in case Zombies invade my island)
  5. Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I love to learn about Lincoln.
3LB: Do you have a favorite mythical creature?
Probably the minotaur. I work with Western Governors University as a Teacher Mentor. One of my student’s kids misunderstood her when she called me her “mentor” hearing “minotaur” instead. Since then, I’m known as the teacher minotaur.
3LB: Tell us five interesting things about yourself.
That’s a tough one, but I’ll try:
  1. I go to work everyday in my pajamas
  2. I love the Twilight Zone and can’t go to sleep at night until I’ve watched an episode
  3. I used to teach 5th grade
  4. I learned to speak Spanish in Philadelphia
  5. I am half Texan
3LB: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Please check out the fundraiser I’m doing for my twelve year old neighbor, Alyssa. Profits from all pre-orders of Huber Hill and the Dead Man’s Treasure as well as book sales during the first two weeks of launch will go to her family- www.treasureforalyssa.com. We’re also doing a fun run at her school if you live along with the Wastach Front area.
